Definizioni
Si costruiscono combinando e x e^x e x ed e − x e^{-x} e − x :
sinh x = e x − e − x 2 cosh x = e x + e − x 2 tanh x = sinh x cosh x = e x − e − x e x + e − x \sinh x = \frac{e^x - e^{-x}}{2} \qquad \cosh x = \frac{e^x + e^{-x}}{2} \qquad \tanh x = \frac{\sinh x}{\cosh x} = \frac{e^x - e^{-x}}{e^x + e^{-x}} sinh x = 2 e x − e − x cosh x = 2 e x + e − x tanh x = cosh x sinh x = e x + e − x e x − e − x
Si leggono seno iperbolico , coseno iperbolico , tangente iperbolica . Sono definite per ogni x ∈ R x \in \mathbb{R} x ∈ R (per tanh \tanh tanh il denominatore e x + e − x e^x + e^{-x} e x + e − x è sempre > 0 > 0 > 0 ).
Esempio numerico: sinh 1 = e − e − 1 2 ≈ 2 , 718 − 0 , 368 2 ≈ 1 , 175 \sinh 1 = \frac{e - e^{-1}}{2} \approx \frac{2{,}718 - 0{,}368}{2} \approx 1{,}175 sinh 1 = 2 e − e − 1 ≈ 2 2 , 718 − 0 , 368 ≈ 1 , 175 ; cosh 1 ≈ 2 , 718 + 0 , 368 2 ≈ 1 , 543 \cosh 1 \approx \frac{2{,}718 + 0{,}368}{2} \approx 1{,}543 cosh 1 ≈ 2 2 , 718 + 0 , 368 ≈ 1 , 543 .
Seno iperbolico
Dispari: sinh ( − x ) = e − x − e x 2 = − e x − e − x 2 = − sinh x \sinh(-x) = \frac{e^{-x} - e^{x}}{2} = -\frac{e^x - e^{-x}}{2} = -\sinh x sinh ( − x ) = 2 e − x − e x = − 2 e x − e − x = − sinh x .
sinh 0 = 1 − 1 2 = 0 \sinh 0 = \frac{1 - 1}{2} = 0 sinh 0 = 2 1 − 1 = 0 . (In generale una funzione dispari con 0 0 0 nel dominio vale 0 0 0 in 0 0 0 : da f ( − 0 ) = − f ( 0 ) f(-0) = -f(0) f ( − 0 ) = − f ( 0 ) si ha f ( 0 ) = − f ( 0 ) f(0) = -f(0) f ( 0 ) = − f ( 0 ) , cioè 2 f ( 0 ) = 0 2f(0) = 0 2 f ( 0 ) = 0 .)
Strettamente crescente su R \mathbb{R} R : si scrive sinh x = e x 2 − 1 2 e x \sinh x = \frac{e^x}{2} - \frac{1}{2e^x} sinh x = 2 e x − 2 e x 1 . Il primo termine è strettamente crescente; 1 2 e x \frac{1}{2e^x} 2 e x 1 è strettamente decrescente (reciproco di una funzione positiva crescente), quindi − 1 2 e x -\frac{1}{2e^x} − 2 e x 1 è strettamente crescente. Somma di due funzioni strettamente crescenti: strettamente crescente.
sinh : R → R \sinh : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} sinh : R → R , con immagine tutto R \mathbb{R} R .
Grafico interattivo: y = sinh x: dispari, strettamente crescente, passa per l'origine
Coseno iperbolico
Pari: cosh ( − x ) = e − x + e x 2 = cosh x \cosh(-x) = \frac{e^{-x} + e^{x}}{2} = \cosh x cosh ( − x ) = 2 e − x + e x = cosh x .
cosh 0 = 1 + 1 2 = 1 \cosh 0 = \frac{1 + 1}{2} = 1 cosh 0 = 2 1 + 1 = 1 , e cosh x ≥ 1 \cosh x \ge 1 cosh x ≥ 1 per ogni x x x .
Strettamente crescente per x ≥ 0 x \ge 0 x ≥ 0 (si dimostrerà facilmente con le derivate); per simmetria è strettamente decrescente per x ≤ 0 x \le 0 x ≤ 0 . Il grafico ha la forma di una "U" (è la forma di una catena appesa per gli estremi: si chiama catenaria ), con il minimo in ( 0 , 1 ) (0, 1) ( 0 , 1 ) .
Grafico interattivo: y = cosh x: pari, sempre ≥ 1, minimo nel punto (0, 1)
Tangente iperbolica
Dispari: tanh ( − x ) = sinh ( − x ) cosh ( − x ) = − sinh x cosh x = − tanh x \tanh(-x) = \frac{\sinh(-x)}{\cosh(-x)} = \frac{-\sinh x}{\cosh x} = -\tanh x tanh ( − x ) = c o s h ( − x ) s i n h ( − x ) = c o s h x − s i n h x = − tanh x (seno iperbolico dispari, coseno pari). tanh 0 = 0 \tanh 0 = 0 tanh 0 = 0 .
Limitata: − 1 < tanh x < 1 -1 < \tanh x < 1 − 1 < tanh x < 1 per ogni x x x . Per esempio tanh x > − 1 \tanh x > -1 tanh x > − 1 : moltiplicando per il denominatore positivo e x + e − x e^x + e^{-x} e x + e − x , equivale a e x − e − x > − e x − e − x e^x - e^{-x} > -e^x - e^{-x} e x − e − x > − e x − e − x , cioè 2 e x > 0 2e^x > 0 2 e x > 0 , vero. (L'altra disuguaglianza è analoga: e x − e − x < e x + e − x ⟺ 0 < 2 e − x e^x - e^{-x} < e^x + e^{-x} \iff 0 < 2e^{-x} e x − e − x < e x + e − x ⟺ 0 < 2 e − x .)
Strettamente crescente su R \mathbb{R} R ; il grafico si avvicina alle rette y = − 1 y = -1 y = − 1 (a sinistra) e y = 1 y = 1 y = 1 (a destra) senza toccarle.
Grafico interattivo: y = tanh x: dispari, crescente, chiusa tra le rette y = −1 e y = 1
La proprietà fondamentale
cosh 2 x − sinh 2 x = 1 ∀ x ∈ R \cosh^2 x - \sinh^2 x = 1 \qquad \forall x \in \mathbb{R} cosh 2 x − sinh 2 x = 1 ∀ x ∈ R
Dimostrazione. Si sviluppano i quadrati, ricordando che e x ⋅ e − x = e 0 = 1 e^x \cdot e^{-x} = e^0 = 1 e x ⋅ e − x = e 0 = 1 :
cosh 2 x − sinh 2 x = ( e x + e − x ) 2 − ( e x − e − x ) 2 4 = ( e 2 x + 2 + e − 2 x ) − ( e 2 x − 2 + e − 2 x ) 4 = 4 4 = 1 ■ \cosh^2 x - \sinh^2 x = \frac{(e^x + e^{-x})^2 - (e^x - e^{-x})^2}{4} = \frac{\left(e^{2x} + 2 + e^{-2x}\right) - \left(e^{2x} - 2 + e^{-2x}\right)}{4} = \frac{4}{4} = 1 \qquad \blacksquare cosh 2 x − sinh 2 x = 4 ( e x + e − x ) 2 − ( e x − e − x ) 2 = 4 ( e 2 x + 2 + e − 2 x ) − ( e 2 x − 2 + e − 2 x ) = 4 4 = 1 ■
Conseguenze: cosh x = 1 + sinh 2 x \cosh x = \sqrt{1 + \sinh^2 x} cosh x = 1 + sinh 2 x (con il segno + + + perché cosh x > 0 \cosh x > 0 cosh x > 0 ), e sinh x = ± cosh 2 x − 1 \sinh x = \pm\sqrt{\cosh^2 x - 1} sinh x = ± cosh 2 x − 1 con il segno + + + per x ≥ 0 x \ge 0 x ≥ 0 e − - − per x < 0 x < 0 x < 0 .
Significato geometrico (perché "iperboliche")
Posto X = cosh x X = \cosh x X = cosh x e Y = sinh x Y = \sinh x Y = sinh x , la proprietà fondamentale dice X 2 − Y 2 = 1 X^2 - Y^2 = 1 X 2 − Y 2 = 1 : il punto P = ( cosh x , sinh x ) P = (\cosh x, \sinh x) P = ( cosh x , sinh x ) sta sull'iperbole X 2 − Y 2 = 1 X^2 - Y^2 = 1 X 2 − Y 2 = 1 , e precisamente sul ramo con X > 0 X > 0 X > 0 (perché cosh x > 0 \cosh x > 0 cosh x > 0 ). Al variare di x x x da − ∞ -\infty − ∞ a + ∞ +\infty + ∞ , P P P percorre tutto quel ramo, dal basso verso l'alto, passando per ( 1 , 0 ) (1, 0) ( 1 , 0 ) quando x = 0 x = 0 x = 0 . È l'analogo di quello che fanno cos \cos cos e sin \sin sin sulla circonferenza X 2 + Y 2 = 1 X^2 + Y^2 = 1 X 2 + Y 2 = 1 (vedi Funzioni trigonometriche e loro inverseSeno, coseno e tangente definiti sulla circonferenza goniometrica (angoli in radianti), le loro proprietà e le inverse arcoseno, arcocoseno e arcotangente.Funzioni trigonometriche e loro inverse → ).
Le inverse
1. Settore seno iperbolico. sinh : R → R \sinh : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} sinh : R → R è strettamente crescente (quindi iniettiva) e suriettiva: esiste l'inversa
s e t t s i n h = sinh − 1 : R → R \mathrm{settsinh} = \sinh^{-1} : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} settsinh = sinh − 1 : R → R
strettamente crescente e dispari.
2. Settore coseno iperbolico. cosh : R → R \cosh : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} cosh : R → R non è iniettiva (è pari: cosh ( − 1 ) = cosh 1 \cosh(-1) = \cosh 1 cosh ( − 1 ) = cosh 1 ). Però la sua restrizione cosh : [ 0 , + ∞ ) → [ 1 , + ∞ ) \cosh : [0, +\infty) \to [1, +\infty) cosh : [ 0 , + ∞ ) → [ 1 , + ∞ ) è strettamente crescente e suriettiva, e si definisce
s e t t c o s h = cosh − 1 : [ 1 , + ∞ ) → [ 0 , + ∞ ) \mathrm{settcosh} = \cosh^{-1} : [1, +\infty) \to [0, +\infty) settcosh = cosh − 1 : [ 1 , + ∞ ) → [ 0 , + ∞ )
strettamente crescente. Attenzione al dominio: s e t t c o s h \mathrm{settcosh} settcosh esiste solo per argomenti ≥ 1 \ge 1 ≥ 1 .
3. Settore tangente iperbolica. tanh : R → ( − 1 , 1 ) \tanh : \mathbb{R} \to (-1, 1) tanh : R → ( − 1 , 1 ) è strettamente crescente, dispari, suriettiva su ( − 1 , 1 ) (-1, 1) ( − 1 , 1 ) :
s e t t t a n h = tanh − 1 : ( − 1 , 1 ) → R \mathrm{setttanh} = \tanh^{-1} : (-1, 1) \to \mathbb{R} setttanh = tanh − 1 : ( − 1 , 1 ) → R
strettamente crescente e dispari.
s e t t s i n h x = ln ( x + x 2 + 1 ) ∀ x ∈ R s e t t c o s h x = ln ( x + x 2 − 1 ) ∀ x ≥ 1 s e t t t a n h x = 1 2 ln ( 1 + x 1 − x ) ∀ x ∈ ( − 1 , 1 ) \mathrm{settsinh}\, x = \ln\left(x + \sqrt{x^2 + 1}\right) \ \ \forall x \in \mathbb{R} \qquad \mathrm{settcosh}\, x = \ln\left(x + \sqrt{x^2 - 1}\right) \ \ \forall x \ge 1 \qquad \mathrm{setttanh}\, x = \frac12 \ln\left(\frac{1 + x}{1 - x}\right) \ \ \forall x \in (-1, 1) settsinh x = ln ( x + x 2 + 1 ) ∀ x ∈ R settcosh x = ln ( x + x 2 − 1 ) ∀ x ≥ 1 setttanh x = 2 1 ln ( 1 − x 1 + x ) ∀ x ∈ ( − 1 , 1 )
Dimostrazione della prima (come la fa la prof). Si deve esplicitare x x x da y = sinh x y = \sinh x y = sinh x :
y = e x − e − x 2 ⟺ e x − e − x = 2 y ⟺ e x − 2 y − e − x = 0 y = \frac{e^x - e^{-x}}{2} \iff e^x - e^{-x} = 2y \iff e^x - 2y - e^{-x} = 0 y = 2 e x − e − x ⟺ e x − e − x = 2 y ⟺ e x − 2 y − e − x = 0 .
Si moltiplica per e x > 0 e^x > 0 e x > 0 (trucco da ricordare per equazioni e disequazioni con e x e^x e x ed e − x e^{-x} e − x ): e 2 x − 2 y e x − 1 = 0 e^{2x} - 2y\,e^x - 1 = 0 e 2 x − 2 y e x − 1 = 0 .
Si pone t = e x t = e^x t = e x : t 2 − 2 y t − 1 = 0 t^2 - 2yt - 1 = 0 t 2 − 2 y t − 1 = 0 , equazione di secondo grado in t t t , con soluzioni t 1 , 2 = y ± y 2 + 1 t_{1,2} = y \pm \sqrt{y^2 + 1} t 1 , 2 = y ± y 2 + 1 .
Si scarta la soluzione negativa: y − y 2 + 1 < 0 y - \sqrt{y^2 + 1} < 0 y − y 2 + 1 < 0 (perché y 2 + 1 > y 2 = ∣ y ∣ ≥ y \sqrt{y^2 + 1} > \sqrt{y^2} = |y| \ge y y 2 + 1 > y 2 = ∣ y ∣ ≥ y ), ma e x > 0 e^x > 0 e x > 0 : non va bene. Resta e x = y + y 2 + 1 e^x = y + \sqrt{y^2 + 1} e x = y + y 2 + 1 (che è > 0 > 0 > 0 ).
Si prende il logaritmo: x = ln ( y + y 2 + 1 ) x = \ln\left(y + \sqrt{y^2 + 1}\right) x = ln ( y + y 2 + 1 ) .
Scambiando i nomi delle variabili: s e t t s i n h x = ln ( x + x 2 + 1 ) \mathrm{settsinh}\, x = \ln\left(x + \sqrt{x^2 + 1}\right) settsinh x = ln ( x + x 2 + 1 ) ∎.
Controllo: s e t t s i n h ( 0 ) = ln ( 0 + 1 ) = 0 \mathrm{settsinh}(0) = \ln(0 + 1) = 0 settsinh ( 0 ) = ln ( 0 + 1 ) = 0 ✓ (e sinh 0 = 0 \sinh 0 = 0 sinh 0 = 0 ).
Grafico interattivo: y = settsinh x = ln(x + √(x² + 1)): l'inversa di sinh, simmetrica rispetto a y = x
Grafico interattivo: y = settcosh x = ln(x + √(x² − 1)): definita solo per x ≥ 1, parte da (1, 0)
Errori comuni
Usare s e t t c o s h \mathrm{settcosh} settcosh fuori dal suo dominio [ 1 , + ∞ ) [1, +\infty) [ 1 , + ∞ ) .
Pensare che cosh \cosh cosh sia invertibile su R \mathbb{R} R : lo è solo ristretta a [ 0 , + ∞ ) [0, +\infty) [ 0 , + ∞ ) .
Nelle disequazioni con cosh \cosh cosh , "togliere" il cosh \cosh cosh come se fosse crescente ovunque : è pari, quindi cosh A ≥ cosh B \cosh A \ge \cosh B cosh A ≥ cosh B non equivale ad A ≥ B A \ge B A ≥ B (vedi l'Esercizio 24 - disequazione con il coseno iperbolico ).
